people mailed a settlement notice who never file a claim
$4.25 billion
handed back by state unclaimed-money offices last year
94%
of people who did file and were sent a cheque, cashed it

Claims and cashing rates: FTC staff report, Consumers and Class Actions, 2019. Unclaimed property: NAUPA, FY2025 report.

Right now you might be thinking…

“If I were owed anything, somebody would have told me.”
“Those letters are probably a scam.”
“It will be four dollars and an afternoon of forms.”
“I have moved twice. They would never find me.”

Sound familiar?

Every one of those is covered in here. This was built for people starting from exactly that spot.

By the end of it, you can…

  • ✓Find money in 12 real government sources. Most people have checked just one.
  • ✓Read any notice the right way. Four dates, and only one is yours. It is not the one most people write down.
  • ✓File with no receipts. Most payouts take a signed note instead. Almost no one knows this.
  • ✓Never pay a fee to claim your own money. The scam rules, in the FTC’s own words.
  • ✓Track each claim in the Excel sheet. It already has all 51 state offices in it.

…and a good deal more.

If you want to be sure of the answer, these four do that:

A sample page from Start Here: The Money-Owed Map

1. Start Here: The Money-Owed Map

The whole system on five pages: the twelve official places money sits, the four-date rule on every settlement notice, and the scam test you run before you type anything. Read this one first and you will know which of the rest you actually need.

$29Included
A sample page from How the Money Ends Up Unclaimed

2. How the Money Ends Up Unclaimed

Three completely different machines send money back to ordinary people — court settlements, regulator refunds, and state unclaimed property — and they behave nothing alike. This part tells you which one you are dealing with, whether you have to do anything at all, and how long it takes.

$29Included
A sample page from Is It Real? The Scam-Proof Rules

3. Is It Real? The Scam-Proof Rules

Every legitimate notice carries a case name, a court, and a Claimant ID. Every fake one asks for something. The checks here let you verify a notice in about two minutes, and they rule out the fee-to-search sites that look official and are not.

$24Included
A sample page from The Source Vault: 12 Places Money Sits

4. The Source Vault: 12 Places Money Sits

The part people keep. Twelve official government destinations, each verified before publication, each holding a different kind of money — forgotten accounts, uncashed paychecks, deposits, insurance payouts, old pensions, savings bonds. Ordered highest-yield first, so the ones that do not apply cost you nothing to skip.

$29Included
A sample page from Proof: Claiming When the Receipts Are Gone

5. Proof: Claiming When the Receipts Are Gone

The single most common reason people abandon a legitimate claim is thinking “that was four years ago, I have nothing.” In most consumer settlements that does not matter. This part shows what counts as proof, what an attestation covers, and the one folder habit that makes the next claim take two minutes.

If you want it to hold, these do that:

6. File It Right, and Actually Get Paid

A claim that qualifies can still fail on a typo, a missed postmark, or a payment method that never arrived. The walkthrough, then the half nobody discusses: what happens in the months after you file, and exactly what to do when nothing comes.

A sample page from The Twice-a-Year Sweep

7. The Twice-a-Year Sweep

Everything in the kit collapses into one routine you run on two dates you already remember. Ordered highest-yield first, so if you get interrupted you have already done the part that matters. About twenty minutes.

A sample page from The Money Owed Tracker (Excel)

8. The Money Owed Tracker (Excel)

One row per claim: what it is, the Claimant ID, the deadline that actually counts, what you filed, and what arrived. It is the difference between claiming once and claiming every time.

The usual hesitations:

“If I were owed anything, somebody would have told me”

That is exactly what the first part is for — it starts from zero and tells you the next single thing to do.

“Those letters are probably a scam”

Everything is a PDF in large type you can print at home. Nothing to install, nothing to set up.

“It will be four dollars and an afternoon of forms”

Then start with the one-page scan. It takes ten minutes and tells you whether the rest is worth your afternoon.

“I have moved twice. They would never find me”

Hand it to them. The worksheets are built to be filled in together and the scripts are written to be read out loud.

The practical questions

Is this just a list I could find myself?+

Every source in here is public. You could find them one at a time. The work is knowing which twelve really hold money for people like you. What each one wants before it pays. And how to read a notice so you file in time. That is a system, not a list. And the part that does go stale ships on its own, with a date on it, so you always know how fresh it is.

How often is it updated?+

The open-payouts sheet has a date on the cover, and we refresh it, because payouts open and close all the time. The rest does not go stale, so it does not need updating. Updates cost you nothing.

Is this easy to use?+

Yes. Plain words, big type, and simple lists. Plus a big-print card with the whole routine on it. If you can read a letter and fill in a web form, you can use this.

Does it cost anything to file?+

No. Filing a real claim is always free on the real site. No government program ever charges you to look. If anyone asks for a fee, it is a scam, and the kit shows you why.

Do I need Excel?+

No. The sheet is a bonus, not the product. It all works on paper with the pages you can print. If you do have Excel, Numbers, or free Google Sheets, the sheet opens in all of them.

When do I get it?+

Right away. It shows up on your screen the moment you pay. We email you a copy too.

Do I pay every month?+

No. You pay $67 one time. Nothing repeats. There is nothing to cancel.

Is this legal or tax advice?+

No. It only teaches you. The tax part puts the IRS rules in plain words, so you know what to ask. For more than a small refund, take your papers to a tax pro. Filing a claim is free on the real site, and you always deal with them yourself.

What if I have no receipts?+

Most payouts take a signed note instead of proof. The guide covers which ones, what else counts as proof, and the words to use.

There is money with your name on it. And almost no one looks where it really sits.

The Twelve-Source Sweep · the complete method

If you have ever opened a letter that said you might be owed money and thrown it away — give me the next four minutes. There are twelve places that money sits. Almost everyone has looked in one.

Why I made this, and what I checked

For ten years I have published something about retirement money every day. Thousands of articles on Social Security, Medicare and benefits — and underneath them, tens of thousands of comments from the people living it.

One letter comes up more than any other. Somebody is sent a notice saying they may be owed money, and they cannot tell whether it is real. They forward it and ask the same two questions: is this real, and is it worth my afternoon?

The answer turned out to be more complicated than yes or no. Some of those letters are worth four dollars. Some are worth four figures. And some are not letters at all — they are the fee-charging sites that dress up as the government and charge you to look at a list that is free.

So I did the slow version. I opened all twelve official sources myself, read what each one wants before it pays, and wrote it down. That is what this is.

If you have already looked and found nothing, here is why

Nearly everyone who checks does the same thing. They search their own state’s unclaimed-property site, see nothing, and decide they are not owed anything.

That search is real. It is also one of twelve.

There are three completely different machines sending money back to ordinary people, and they behave nothing alike:

The notice you threw away. Someone sues a company, the company pays, and a letter goes out to everyone covered. There is a deadline. Miss it and the money goes back.

The refund nobody told you about. An agency fines a company and hands the money back to the people it took it from. Often you do not have to do anything — but only if they can find you.

The account that stopped being yours. Banks, employers and insurers hand over accounts they have lost track of. There is no deadline. There is also no notice.

Each one wants different things from you. Each pays on a different schedule. The single state search most people run touches one of the three, in one state, for one kind of money.

That is the gap. Not effort — direction.

The Twelve-Source Sweep

One routine, run twice a year, on two dates you already remember. About twenty minutes.

The twelve are ordered highest-yield first, on purpose — so if you get interrupted after six minutes you have already done the part that matters, and the ones that do not apply to you cost nothing to skip.

The four-date rule

Every settlement notice carries four dates. Only one is yours. It is not the one most people write down, and writing down the wrong one is the most common way a legitimate claim dies.

You usually do not need receipts

The most common reason people abandon a claim they would have won is thinking that was four years ago, I have nothing. In most consumer settlements a signed statement is accepted instead of proof.

What is actually in it

Ten parts. Every page number below is real — pulled from the files themselves.

1 · Start Here: The Money-Owed Map — 5 pages

The 60-second scan on page 4: six boxes, you tick the one that fits you, and it sends you straight to the part you need today.

2 · How the Money Ends Up Unclaimed — 6 pages

The four dates and what each one does, page 5. Then page 6 shows a real Important Dates box with your date marked — it is the third one.

3 · Is It Real? The Scam-Proof Rules — 4 pages

The contact rule on page 3, in the FTC’s own words from their March 2026 alert. The five checks on page 4.

4 · The Source Vault: 12 Places Money Sits — 7 pages

The part people keep. CFPB payments page 3. Treasury Hunt — savings bonds that stopped earning after 30 years — page 4. The IRS three-year rule page 5, where missing it means the money is gone permanently.

5 · Proof: Claiming When the Receipts Are Gone — 4 pages

The one-folder habit on page 2. What “attestation” actually means on page 3.

6 · File It Right, and Actually Get Paid — 9 pages

What to do when nothing arrives, page 4. Why “up to $4,000” becomes $38, with the arithmetic, page 5. Claiming for a parent, page 8.

7 · The Twice-a-Year Sweep — 8 pages

Three worksheets you photocopy: claim log page 4, payment tracker page 5, sweep sheet page 6. The official source directory is page 7.

8 · The Money Owed Tracker (Excel)

One row per claim. All 51 state offices already in it.

9 · Quick-Start Sheet (Large Print) — 4 pages

Two rules that matter and the six searches worth doing first.

10 · Open Settlements Supplement — 3 pages

The settlements accepting claims, each with who qualifies, the claim deadline, and the official address to type in yourself. Dated on the cover and refreshed, because this is the one part that goes stale. Updates cost you nothing.

When the next letter lands, there are two versions of it

Without the kit

You cannot tell if it is real. It goes on the pile. Six weeks later the deadline passes and the money goes back.

With the kit

Three lines: case name, court, Claimant ID. You know it is real, you know which date is yours, and it is one row on the tracker.

What this looks like on a Tuesday afternoon

You print the large-print sheet. Twenty minutes later you have run six searches, found two notices worth answering, and written both onto the tracker with the date that actually counts.

Six months later you do it again and it takes eleven minutes, because the hard part was knowing where to look.

What it costs, against what it replaces

Every source is public. You could find them one at a time. The work is knowing which twelve hold money for people like you, what each wants before it pays, and how to read a notice so you file in time.

The fee-to-search sites will do a worse version for a charge. Filing a real claim is always free on the real site, and no government programme ever charges you to look.
